Angels have existed since the dawn of time and they are highly evolved spiritual beings who were created by the divine source to shine a light on all of existence. They are universal to most religions, but you do not need to be religious to have Angelic experiences or to receive assistance from them. They act as celestial intermediaries between the creator and humanity. 

Angels vibrate on the frequency of the seventh dimension and glorify the creator through their pure intentions and acts of love. They only know pure love and therefore do not engage in the ways of humans, especially those with non-loving vibrations. As their own consciousness is so highly evolved, they neither take sides in wars nor seek to be self-serving in any way. Everything they think, feel and do is from a state of pure grace and acceptance for all. 

They hold no physical appearance, as they are pure light beings. However, for the comfort and ease of humans, they can take on human attributes and qualities in order for our minds to associate with them. 

There are many different types of Angels ranging from Guardian Angels To Seraphim. Each of these sectors of Angels governing different areas of universal tasks. The ones you may hear of often are Guardian Angels and Archangels. These work closely with humans to help in their evolution. Angels can be seen as ministers to us, as they often whisper beautiful thoughts to our souls to help us rise above our circumstances. They also offer us protection and can show up in human or animal form to lead us forward. 

I personally believe we all have a Guardian Angel who is assigned to us throughout all our lifetimes. I also believe that we also have an Archangel assigned to us at birth or prior to when the soul enters the fetus. This Archangel helps us in the types of life lessons we have chosen to learn and can help our soul evolve in human form.
